Black Trans Project
A peer lead grassroots project whose objectives are to support and improve the wellbeing of the Black Trans(gender) Community.
....
Black Trans Project seeks to improve the treatment of the Black Trans people by an ill-informed medical profession, without knowledge or training it knows little of the medical and mental health needs of the community and is often transphobic, racist, obstructive, and hostile in its delivery of care.
In order to change this outdated and damaging culture, we seek to work with the healthcare service. To offer community support to Black Trans people entering the system, to establish guidelines and standards of best practice to those in the community they are treating.
Black Trans Project recognizes that as a marginalized group we need to build resilience and solidarity. We need to bring the community together and build spaces both virtual and physical, where we can share our stories, relax, and heal.
The Black Trans Project will raise awareness of our community building and the project's objectives with fundraising and social campaigning.
The Black Trans Project is excited to be working on our first fundraising campaign with the artist Neneh Cherry who is a supporter of the community and an advocate for change. On
Friday, September the 4th she will release two remixed of the singles 'Kong' and 'Slow Release ' from her latest album 'Broken Politics' on Bandcamp, with all royalties going to Black Trans Project.

The Black Trans Community faces daily discrimination, racism, and violence across all aspects of life from everyday shopping and socializing to fundamental human rights and basic necessities of housing and employment.
With the first objectives, we are looking at issues that affect all of the community and ones we have the capacity to manage and sustain.
We will broaden our objectives as we grow, invest in more community consultations, and build resilience into the project and the community it serves. We are looking at an initial two year period to develop the organization, identify other needs and formulate objectives, raise awareness, raise funds, and make connections with other groups and allies with aligned intersectional mandates.

The Black Trans Project is being facilitated and hosted by VFD, working alongside art therapists and artists and in consultation with the community.
Here are some of the sentiments and stories shared by members of the Black Trans community in our initial consultation.

My GP stopped prescribing my hormones after a year of being on testosterone gel. I ended up taking her to the General Medical Council on charges of 'Fitness to Practice'. What she did was so dangerous, as she had no idea of my circumstances, where I was living, my social and mental health support. No idea what my reaction would be. Especially when it is well-documented that there are very high rates of depression and suicide amongst the trans community.

'I would love to make more trans friends and have a safe space for Trans women of colour to heal together.'

This is where the NHS fails us. You go to the NHS and say 'I am experiencing lots of transphobia from the public. Help me!!... and they can't. I can go to a private healthcare practitioner and say ' I need to have full facial surgery because people treat me like shit! Help me!! and they will. I don't want to say that the NHS doesn't care but that is what it feels like.

It is important to remember that WHO the World Health Organisation, only recently in May 2019 stopped classifying people who identify as Transgender as having a Mental Disorder. We still have a long way to go to change the outdated language, attitudes, and culture surrounding the Trans community.
