Dear Valentine,

At the end of October last year, my anxiety was off the charts. Not only was another Covid lockdown clearly on its way but it was a week before the American presidential election. The deafening noise of Donald Trump's racist, misogynistic and aggressive tweets, coupled with the virus's horrifying takeover, both started to haunt me in the night. The two horrors mixed in a toxic cocktail that tasted somewhat familiar. It reminded me of my high school bullies George and Kelvin from so long ago. These boys were relentless in the tactics of trying to bring me down.

George and Kelvin loved to mock me because I was Queer. They worked so hard to make me feel ashamed of who I was. As I blossomed and bloomed I grew to love myself and understand that it is the acceptance of our differences and uniqueness that foster community, help us learn from one another, and overcome adversity together.

Whether you have been bullied or been a bully, right now we are all facing turbulence. It is times like this that we need each other but sadly today we find ourselves at a distance.

Through my work, I hope to promote love. As we head into the changing world may I offer a gentle reminder to be kind to others and love yourself. Please never forget that you are the most beautiful rose on the planet.

Your Valentine
