Friday 7pm 22/06/2023

NOMAD Stage Shangri-La, Glastonbury Festival

In a time where violence is normalised and oppressive structures the norm, it often feels harder than ever to feel safe in our own skin. Martial Arts has a reputation for being a physical and solitary practice, but its mental and social aspects are often overlooked. In this crash course combining self-defence and mediation, Black Venus will take us on a journey through the body, mind and soul so that we can feel safer, more confident and more connected moving through the world.

With over twenty years experience in the field, Black Venus is a martial artist bringing to life self-defence through her extensive background in facilitation and creative practices. A queer black female from the hood and a sex worker for over a decade, Venus' advocacy emerges from at the intersection of her identities. Her personal experiences inform her practice where she aims to inspire and engage audiences with radical ways of thinking about self-defence from physical, spiritual and social perspectives. She is one half of Shadow Sistxrs Fight Club, a physical & meta-physical self defence club for women, nb & QTIPOC witches, and co-founder of Sex and Rage, a sex worker and advocacy led organisation resisting stigma and shame through sex education.
